課程概述

「發展理論」(development theory)最初被創設出來，主要是用來解釋一個國家經濟與社會發展的過程與現象，因此而產生現代化理論、依賴理論、世界體系理論等三大理論派別。本所既名為「國家發展研究所」，是以「國家」作為教學與研究的分析單位，因此所關注的視野不限於傳統發展理論的範疇。而是從「國家」這個概念出發，思考國家發展所面臨的諸多議題與問題，以作為教學研究的內容。
國家是人類的產物，雖然並不完美，卻是目前人類社會所無法避免的組織，它的存在目的與功能，隨著內外環境的發展，有著極大的變化，有些被消滅或取代，也有些則被新創設出來，這些都構成國家發展的重要內容。
概言之，本課程的內容分為總論與分論兩大部分，總論部分主要探討國家的本質、類型與現代國家的形成與發展；分論部分則著重在國家發展的五個主要面向：國內政治、國際政治、經濟、社會與全球化。每個面向各有若干主題，皆與當前我國的國家發展息息相關，希望藉此提供學習者對現代國家政治、社會與經濟之變遷(change)、形構(formation)與轉型(transformation)的理論輪廓，並延伸思考在全球化脈絡下這些理論的解釋與批判政治、社會、經濟現象的效力，從而反思我國家發展的方向。

課程目標

本課程目標在深化修習者對國家發展理論的瞭解，培養此一課程成為本所學生的核心能力，進而對未來相關的研究具有基礎作用與指導功能。

課程要求

本課程的報告有兩部分，第一部分是課堂報告，依修課人數排定每個人報告的次數；第二部分是期末報告，在學期結束的一週內繳交，期末報告可就課堂報告的題材修改完備繳交，或重新選擇一題材撰寫繳交。
